Big Balloch. Retreat and Performance Hall for Big Noise Sistema Scotland. BArch (2019-20)
Big Noise Big Community Big Heart Big Music Big Gig Big Lomond Big Space
The town of Balloch is known as the gateway to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. The lake, carved out by a primeval glacier’s travel, is deep and narrow to the north, but widens and becomes more shallow as it approaches the southern basin and urban life.
The project required the engagement of two concepts, that of a residence for Sistema Scotland’s Big Noise initiative (a charitable organisation helping children from lower-income families to master an instrument while being part of a larger ensemble) and a performance hall shared by both the children and the town of Balloch itself.
The crux of this project lies in the implementation of natural materials; brick, timber and clay, as well as the contrast generated by ajoining a private retreat to a communal hall, each with challenges of their own. Emphasis was put on researching and realising the hall in rammed earth, as well as other renewables that would speak to the community of Balloch and the immediate landscape of the Scottish Lowlands.
